There’s a Zara polka dot dress that’s everywhere this year. It’s a nice dress, and you can see why it’s flown off the racks. But there’s the how many will see at the next wedding/party?’ worry. There’s loads of ways to avoid that ‘snap’ moment: vintage is good. Sample sales too. Especially if you’re a size 8 with a good dry cleaner. Better still is making something yourself, or having it made for you… that way you get exactly what you want, to fit you perfectly. It can be as wild, or as simple as you like – that’s the joy of it. It’s absolutely you.

Next stop, the wardrobe

I’m still mastering the basics (the tissue holder I’ve made is super smart.) but Bunmi assures us we’re only a class or two away from making our own clothes. Circle skirts (Advanced Beginners class) will be ours. Don’t like skirts? What about wide leg trousers? Or culottes?
The kids’ class has zoomed ahead too: Ariel’s come in to collect the bomber jacket he made, and of course model it for us

I so want one of those

There’s cotton broderies and batiks in the studio (I’m having visions of Dior’s Resort 2020 collection in Marrakech), or we can go shopping for our own fabric – with her guidance so we don’t end up with anything too slippy that’s difficult to sew. I’m desperate to start one.
I stay on after class to check out some more of the Advanced Beginners, and I’m seriously envious.
Judi pops in to show off her circle skirt – she’s just 4 weeks into her Advanced Beginners course and already talking about her next project.
Iris found this gorgeous fabric and needed (yes, really) it to become a circle skirt – and what’s a girl who doesn’t wear trousers to do?! She’s just about to hem it, but I couldn’t resist this quick snap – there’s not going to be another skirt out there like it.
Those skirts are amazing. That’s going to be me! Modelling my own absolutely unique creation. How cool is that?
